MATTHEW 18

Description
Our forgiveness should hold no grudge, no memory and no bitterness towards another. Forgiving three times was the cultural norm at the time Matthew was written, so Peter thought he was being generous with seven. But Jesus responded in a shocking way– not meant to be taken literally but to be taken metaphorically. If you can count seventy times seven, you haven't truly forgiven. True forgiveness is when you forgive and have forgotten the bitterness associated with the deed trespassed against you.
It is not to say we stumble into the same pains and traps as before and that a trespass does not bear consequence, but rather we let go so we can continue to love.
Matthew 18:21 Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? 22 Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.
